20 EYES IN THE FIRE
Not long after Sees With One Eye left her, Raven Wing saw Growling Bear, Brave Fox, and three other men coming. They were dragging a small travois with them. Some of the women use the small travoisâ to carry firewood.
Sky Talker was awake. He was pale and weak, and his eyes had dark circles under them. Raven Wing had told him he must drink much water along with the medicine she mixed and boiled in the small coffee pot sheâd brought.
He nodded that he understood, but drinking made him have to relieve himself, and he felt too weak to get up. He hated to have this woman heâd just met help him with that.
Growling Bear and the others carefully lifted him onto the travois, and they slowly made their way back to the village. His lodge was warm and inviting compared to the cold air where theyâd spent the last couple of days.
Red Fawn was there. She helped make him as comfortable as they could, then told Raven Wing the green medicine was nearly gone. Raven Wing smiled as Red Fawn told her ten more people were now taking it, and many more now wanted it.
White Crow came by and told her that Basket Maker was able to sit up on her own and was feeling much better, though the cough that racked her body had not stopped completely.
Sky Talker was able to acknowledge White Crow and even say a few words to him. White Crow told him that two boys found the cougar that had attacked him dead with his sacred pipe still stuck in the catâs throat. He said several women were caring for the catâs hide for him. Sky Talker smiled and nodded his appreciation.
Raven Wing and Red Fawn started grinding more of the green leaves, and now Dancing Bird came and offered her help. By late in the afternoon, they had five heavy black iron pots over fires boiling the ground-up leaves in the water from the tiny creek.
The village had buried five more, three elderly and two children, since Raven Wing had arrived, but everyone that had started to drink the sweet green liquid was improving. Now everyone wanted to drink the liquid, and Raven Wing could see they were not going to have enough.
Raven Wing asked Growling Bear if he would ride back to the creek and see if he could find more of the plants to pick the leaves from, telling him to leave at least one leaf on each plant so the plant would not die. She reminded him the plants were poison until they were ground and boiled.
Growling Bear and four other volunteers rode out. It was nearly a half-day ride back to the tiny creek. Just as he had followed Raven Wing up the hill to the spring, the others now followed Growling Bear. Growling Bear stopped as he saw the spring. It had only been a few days since he and Raven Wing had stripped the leaves from the small plants.
